Nikka Yoichi 20 years old Single Malt Japanese Whisky

We've successfully procured a selection of older bottlings from the esteemed Nikka distillery, Japan's second-largest whisky producer after Suntory. Currently under the ownership of the Asahi brewery, the distillery was initially established by Masataka Taketsuru. In 1934, he constructed the Yoichi distillery after a two-year sojourn in Scotland studying the intricacies of distillation. Notably, Taketsuru also contributed to the creation of the renowned 'Yamazaki' distillery in Kyoto for Suntory, a venture he managed for a decade.

Famed for its production of robust, peaty, and distinctly masculine malts, Yoichi consistently delivers remarkable expressions. These whiskies derive their unique aroma and robust character from the direct-heating distillation method employed. Here, the pot stills are heated using finely powdered natural coal - a traditional technique that has largely faded from modern practice, even in Scotland.

Nose:

Rich and savoury, bacon fat, then the peatiness comes like a cigar box, leather, caramel creme

Palate:

Big and bold, spicy attack with great fruits like apply skin and kiwi.  Superb sharpness.  This is followed by rich dark chocolate, and notes of old walnuts.  Beautify and highly original.

Finish:

Long and complex, mostly on fresh apples and cinnamon
