In terms of production capacity, Suntory's Hakushu distillery (pronounced "Hack-shoo") takes the lead not only in Japan but globally, standing as the largest malt whisky distillery in the world. Established in 1973 to coincide with Suntory's 50th anniversary, this distillery is situated amidst captivating pine forests, nestled in proximity to the awe-inspiring Japanese Alps. In an effort to preserve water quality and safeguard the local ecosystem, Suntory even acquired the vicinity of the distillery. Notably, the region's water is regarded as the finest in Japan, an asset that Suntory capitalizes on by bottling and distributing it extensively throughout the country.
Interestingly, all the barley essential for producing single malt whisky at this distillery is imported from various origins, including Scotland, France, England, and Australia. The resulting whiskies significantly contribute to the extensive array of malts and blends under the Suntory umbrella. Due to its elevated altitude of 700 meters above sea level, the distillery naturally undergoes low-pressure distillation, a phenomenon believed to enhance the light and fruity character that defines the whiskies produced here.
