Annually, we rejoice in Ardbeg Day, typically observed on the first Saturday of June. During this occasion, we are treated to a limited edition release from the distillery – a creation that embodies novelty, creativity, and exclusivity. These releases, destined to remain unmatched, have transformed into cherished treasures for whisky enthusiasts, with some of the past Ardbeg Day bottlings commanding significantly elevated prices. They have become a collector's reverie.
This year's iteration presents a distinct departure from convention, as the distillery has chosen to forego the use of their purifier. Traditionally, as vapors ascend the still and undergo condensation, they are captured in the purifier. Here, the heavier elements descend back into the still, an iterative process that contributes to the well-recognized floral fruitiness harmonizing with Ardbeg's robust peat flavor. However, this time, the purifier has been removed, evading this procedure. The outcome is a substantial, audacious, peat-forward Ardbeg whisky, bottled at a resolute 46% ABV, and preserved without the intervention of chill-filtration. This bold decision leads to an extraordinary expression that invites aficionados to explore a new facet of Ardbeg's distinctive character.
