Presented by London-based Elixir Distillers, The Single Malts Of Scotland collection is their venture into the world of independent bottling, focusing on Japanese and Scottish whisky, while occasionally featuring American and Irish counterparts. Elixir Distillers boasts three central whisky brands: Elements of Islay, Port Askaig, and The Single Malts of Scotland. Additionally, they release navy rum under the Black Tot brand. The distinguished range of The Single Malts of Scotland showcases independently bottled vintage single malt Scotch from various distilleries, spanning a range of ages.
Constructed in 1967 next to the original operational Clynelish distillery established in 1819, this newer facility emerged due to the high demand for Clynelish spirit in blends during the 1960s. While both distilleries initially operated in parallel as Clynelish A and Clynelish B, the original distillery ceased operations after approximately a year. It was later revived in 1969 to fulfill the need for peated whisky used in Johnnie Walker blends, a result of Caol Ila distillery's temporary closure for renovations due to a drought. The original distillery, known as Brora, produced peated whisky with a phenol content ranging from 30 to 35 Parts per Million (PPM). Although Brora operated until 1983, it's not as highly sought after by collectors. Clynelish Distillery remains a key contributor to Johnnie Walker blends to this day.
The particular single malt being discussed was distilled at Clynelish Distillery, then aged for a decade in an ex-bourbon barrel before being bottled at a robust 60.8% alcohol by volume (ABV). Impressively, only 224 bottles of this expression have been produced for worldwide distribution.
