In a harmonious fusion of our distillery's two central passions, Port Charlotte SC:01 unites a profound commitment to authenticity with the artistry of high-quality French oak. This remarkable release introduces a novel element to our cask exploration series by incorporating Islay-grown barley, marking the first instance of its inclusion.
The 2012 vintage of SC:01 represents a comprehensive journey rooted entirely in Islay, from the cultivation of barley to the final bottling. The 2011 harvest, meticulously cultivated by seven of our local farming partners situated within a 10-mile radius of our distillery, showcases the true essence of Islay terroir. This barley, cultivated on our own island, forms the foundation of this release and is enhanced by a meticulous cask recipe.
After being malted to a phenol level of 40 parts per million (ppm) by our maltsters on the Scottish mainland, the barley returns to Islay for distillation. Through our distinctive tall, narrow-necked stills, the process emphasizes elegance and finesse. The maturation process unfolds in three distinct trajectories, where a harmonious blend of sherry butts and first and second fill American whiskey barrels embark on a unique evolution.
As the maturation progresses, these casks are artfully recasked at different stages into exquisite Sauternes wine casks sourced from the prestigious left bank of the Garonne River in Bordeaux. This intricate recipe culminates in a single malt whisky that encapsulates the quintessential essence of Port Charlotte's peated character.
The flavor journey commences with the mellowness of floral notes reminiscent of gorse, elegantly juxtaposed against the rich profile of honeyed coconut and fudge. This symphony of flavors gradually unfolds, leading to the iconic Port Charlotte BBQ peat smoke, which lingers on the palate, offering a truly immersive and memorable tasting experience.
