This special edition commemorates the 80th anniversary of the second Japanese whisky distillery, established in 1934 by the iconic Masataka Taketsuru, the trailblazer behind it all. It's a timeless blend that results from the harmonious marriage of exceptional single malt and grain whiskies, originating from the Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries, and aged for 12 years in oak casks. However, as previously mentioned, it isn't merely a "budget-friendly blended whisky." Quite the opposite, as the single malt takes the lead, with the grain component contributing sweetness and smoothness to each sip.
Critics often raise the issue of the elevated price associated with this whisky and other offerings from Nikka. Indeed, it does come at a premium, perhaps even exceeding the ideal price point by 10 euros. Nevertheless, Japanese distilleries refrain from exchanging whiskies with each other, resulting in a wholly internal process even for blended varieties. Hence, the equation is simple: the cost reflects the caliber of quality, stemming from impeccable raw materials. Yet, it's the embodiment of Zen mastery, technique, and sensitivity that truly adds value. The meticulous attention poured into crafting this bottle is truly remarkable, striking the perfect equilibrium and embracing a balanced interplay of contrasts rather than opting for excessive stylization. Boasting an alcohol content of 43 degrees, slightly above the minimum threshold, the sensation of warmth remains gentle and never turns aggressive.
